Lieberman vows to vote against IDF bill after unsuccessful phone call with Netanyahu

Early elections may be imminent in Israel after efforts of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberma to resolve the crisis surrounding the IDF draft bill prove unsuccessful. The bill will be brought before Israeli lawmakers amid threats by opposition parties to dissolve the Knesset if it passes.

The tensions in the Israeli coalition continue, despite a late-night phone call between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman in an attempt to resolve the crisis. The two are reportedly expected to meet again on Tuesday.

Lieberman’s party Yisrael Beiteinu appealed the controversial IDF draft bill after it was passed by the Ministerial Committee for Legislation on Monday. The proposal seeks to allow the exemption of ultra-Orthodox yeshiva students from drafting into the military. The Ministerial Committee is expected to discuss the appeal on Tuesday.

The draft bill will be brought before the Knesset for a preliminary vote as part of a compromise deal between the prime minister and the ultra-Orthodox parties for their approval of the 2019 budget. Yisrael Beiteinu has vehemently condemned the bill and even threatened to step down from the coalition if it is passed.

The IDF draft bill is expected to be brought before the Knesset as early as this afternoon, according to Israel’s Hadashot News. If it passes, several opposition parties have announced they intend to submit proposals for the dissolution of the Knesset and early elections.

Israeli Minister of Justice Ayelet Shaked on Tuesday criticized Netanyahu and called the coalition crisis “fictitious.". In a post on her official Twitter account, Shaked claimed that “to dissolve a right-wing government for nothing” would prove to be a “historical mistake.”
