In light of Azaria: Deputy minister proposes blanket immunity bill for IDF soldiersDeputy Defense Minister Eli Ben Dahan has proposed a new bill that will grant blanket immunity to IDF soldiers for their actions carried out before, during and after security operations. Ben Dahan’s proposal comes just days after Elor Azaria was convicted of manslaughter.
Deputy Defense Minister Eli Ben Dahan (Ha-Bayit Ha-Yehudi) is proposing a new bill designed to grant total immunity to IDF soldiers from criminal investigations related to their actions in the field during security operations including their response to a terror attack. According to the bill, Israeli security personnel would be protected from criminal investigations only if their actions were not malicious.
“I want to change the reality,” explained Ben Dahan. “An officer and soldier who are operating within the guidelines and rule of engagement will have immunity.” Ben Dahan is currently campaigning for his bill in order to advance in in the Knesset.

If Ben Dahan’s bill becomes a law, it will extend the immunity already given to security forces during operations to actions carried out before and after security operations as well.
Ben Dahan’s proposal comes just days after a military court convicted IDF soldier Elor Azaria of manslaughter.
