European diplomats to skip Jerusalem US embassy openingMany European ambassadors to Israel said they will not attend next week's opening of the new US embassy in Jerusalem.
A long list of European diplomats have declined an invitation from the Israeli Foreign Ministry to attend the opening of the US embassy in Jerusalem next week.
The ambassadors of the UK, France and Germany, among others, said they will not attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony on May 14. "It a bit strange to invite us to an event we have condemned and spoken against," a senior European official said. "The Americans spared themselves the embarrassment by not inviting us in the first place."
The Israeli Foreign Ministry, however, said they do not know of any declinations. "So far, 30 out of 86 ambassadors accepted the invitation," the ministry said. "Many of them haven't replied yet."
MK Tamar Zandberg, the chairwoman of left-wing party Meretz, has also announced she will not attend the ceremony. In a letter to US Ambassador David Friedman, she explained, "While Jerusalem is a fait accompli, the peace process is very much in doubt, and this kind of unilateral step ... pushes peace further away. Therefore I cannot attend this celebration with a clean conscience." Zandberg also asked to meet with Friedman in order to elaborate on her decision.
