Today (Monday), the Knesset Science and Technology Committee members discussed social media content that encourages terrorist acts, especially on Facebook. MK Revital Swid (Zionist Camp) claimed: “Facebook has become a heaven for terrorists.”

“It’s important to state that Facebook is not a terrorist and does not encourage terrorism,” continued Swid, who is advancing a bill that will allow the Israeli courts to order the removal of content inciting terrorism from social media sites. “This is not the narrative here. However, Facebook has become an invitation for inciting terrorism. This was neither for the site’s benefit nor on purpose.”

MK Michal Rozin (Meretz) commented on Israeli Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan’s remark about Facebook “having blood on its hands” and said: “We needed to be in contact with Facebook in order to bring those who encourage and incite terrorism to justice.”

The Facebook representative said: “I hope to work with you [the Knesset committee members] throughout the year in order to make sure that Facebook deals with the issue in the best way possible. You are doing a great service by bringing the issue to the table.”
