Israeli minister threatens leaving government if recognizes Palestinian state
Government unanimously approves shutting down asylum seekers detention campIn a unanimous vote, the Israeli government approved the closing down of the Holot facility, where asylum seekers are kept in detention. Instead, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, Israel should increase the rate of deportation.
The Israeli government on Sunday voted unanimously for shutting down the Holot detention facility for asylum seekers in southern Israel.
Referring to asylum seekers as "infiltrators," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said an "international agreement" he has reached will allow Israel to deport more asylum seekers than before.
This, Netanyahu added, will make the Holot facility "unnecessary" and will allow the government to "use the resources for increased deportation."
The proposal to shut down the facility was put forth by Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan (Likud) and Interior Minister Aryeh Deri (Shas).
"As a result of Supreme Court rulings, the Holot facility has become a hotel for infiltrators funded by the public," Erdan tweeted on Sunday. "The right policy is prison or deportation."
