Haredi Minister Litzman resigns, Netanyahu to take over Health Ministry

After railway repairs were carried out on Shabbat by Jewish workers, Israeli Health Minister Yaakov Litzman handed in his resignation on Sunday morning. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will take over the Health Ministry without appointing a replacement for Litzman while he tries to convince the Haredi party head to return to his post.

Israeli Health Minister Yaakov Litzman officially resigned from the government Monday after railway maintenance work was conducted on Shabbat. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will oversee the Health Ministry without appointing a replacement for Litzman. Netanyahu hopes that he will be able to convince Litzman to return to his cabinet position over the next few weeks.

The Haredi newspaper Hamodia, which is affiliated with the Ger Hasidic group that Litzman follows, welcomed the ultra-Orthodox United Torah Judaism party head’s decision to resign. The article called on Netanyahu to “come to his senses” after he decided not to halt the railway maintenance work.

The Likud party said in a statement on Friday that Netanyahu “appreciates Litzman very much and hopes that he won’t leave the government.” The ruling party added that despite Litzman’s resignation, the United Torah Judaism party will likely remain in the coalition.

“The faction leaders made it clear that they have no intention of leaving the coalition, which will make it possible to formulate an optimal solution that keeps the Sabbath and also maintains the public’s need for safe and continuous transportation,” the statement noted.
