The Israeli Foreign Ministry has stated that South Africa's ambassador to Israel will be summoned for an official reprimand following anti-Israeli remarks made by two senior officials in the South African government.

During an anti-apartheid week event, Nomvula Mokonyane, the South African Minister of Water and Sanitation, claimed Israel was depriving the Palestinians of water in order to establish its control over them. She also referred to the neutralized Palestinian terrorist who was shot dead by IDF soldier Elor Azaria as "a protester lying on the ground" and said the incident illustrated that the IDF is "a murderous machine."

Another official, Deputy Secretary-General of the ANC Jessie Duarte, called on the government to revoke the citizenships of South African Jews who serve in the IDF.
