Israeli Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz announced today (Sunday) that he plans to run for the leadership of the Likud after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu decides to leave politics.
During an interview with Globes' Stella Korin-Lieber, Katz commented on several topics including the State Comptroller’s report regarding Operation Protective Edge. After Israeli Construction Minister Yoav Galant criticized former IDF Chief of Staff Benny Gantz and former Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon, Katz said: “I prefer to wait until the report is released. I sleep well at night. As a cabinet member and the Israeli intelligence and atomic energy minister, I’m certain that now more than ever we understand the threats and are preparing for them better.”

“At the moment, the main challenge with Hamas is [our] ability to deter a very extremist organization that sees no problem with tens of thousands of Gaza residents being killed in the next conflict,” add Katz. “Even Hezbollah, unlike Hamas, knows that there is a price to losing in Lebanon. Hamas does not have these limits. The new leader, Yahya Sinwar, officially brought about the armed wing’s takeover of the organization in the Gaza Strip.”
