In a Sunday morning radio interview, Israeli Minister of Defense Avigdor Liberman commented on Iran’s recent threats towards Israel: “Israel is operating only when there’s no alternative, and the situation that we have today is of no alternative. The Iranians are trying to deploy weapon systems in Syria that are only directed against Israel, and there’s a need here to be very determined and consistent. We will not allow Syria to become a forward base for Iran.”

Liberman continued: “We established a state to prevent all of the threats, and the one who threatens needs to understand that there are no threats for free and that they will pay the full price. I hope that a war is not coming. Our first duty is to prevent it, but for this to happen, we need concrete deterrence and a willingness to operate. Whatever the price may be, we will not allow a suffocating grip around us.”

Liberman also commented on the recent concerns regarding the transfer of the body of Dr. Fadi Mohammad al-Batsh, the Hamas engineer who was shot dead in Malaysia over the weekend, into the Gaza Strip. Education Minister Naftali Bennett and the family of Hadar Goldin, a fallen IDF soldier whose body is being held captive by Hamas in Gaza, demanded that the Israeli government prevent Batsh’s body from reaching Gaza.

“I have heard the Goldin family and Minister Bennett – it is mainly good for the media. The directive is already standing. We are not allowing bodies to enter the Gaza Strip. This has already passed legal tests. We already gave yesterday the Egyptians a clear message that we ask not to allow the transfer of the body through the Rafah Border Crossing,” he stated.
