After it was reported that Russia and the US have approved the Syria non-escalation agreement that allows Iran to establish a military presence near the Israeli border, Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman clarified Wednesday that the IDF is prepared for every possible scenario. Lieberman stated that the Israeli military will not allow Syria to become a “frontline against the State of Israel.”

At the end of a two-day tour along the northern border with senior IDF officials, Lieberman said that the IDF maintains the right to act freely in order to protect its borders and security interests. “We won’t tolerate Shi’ite buildup, Iranian buildup, in Syria,” he explained.

The first draft of the “buffer zone map,” which defines which forces will be allowed to operate in Syria, was publicized on Monday. As reported by JOL, government officials in Jerusalem are concerned about the agreement, which will allow the Syrian rebels to remain uncomfortably close to the border with Israel. This essentially means that Iran and Hezbollah will be free to establish an unprecedented and undisturbed military presence just a few miles away from Israel.
