Likud Central Committee votes in favor of Israeli sovereignty in settlementsThe Likud Central Committee, the body that determines the movement’s current issues, voted in favor of the non-binding resolution to implement Israeli sovereignty in settlements in the West Bank. The vote urges the Israeli government to promote relevant legislation.
Likud Central Committee activists voted on Sunday in favor of the resolution urging government legislators to implement Israeli sovereignty in settlements in the West Bank. After a two-hour long discussion, the resolution was passed with a majority of votes, which included several members of Knesset.
According to the Likud party constitution, a resolution passed by the Central Committee must be promoted for legislation by party members in the Knesset. However, as previously reported by JOL, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is unlikely to support the committee’s wishes.
Several Israeli politicians spoke during the event. Knesset Speaker Yuli-Yoel Edelstein supported the resolution and said: “This evening, our wish, our message is entirely clear - implementing Israeli sovereignty in Judea and Samaria. We will no longer agree after more than 50 years that our brothers in Gush Etzion, Shiloh, Ariel and Ma'ale Adumim will be second class citizens, so to speak.”
Former Internal Affairs Minister Gideon Sa'ar said: “I congratulate the initiators of the resolution, since this has always been our belief, always been our dream, aspiration and way.” Last week, Likud activists said that the party is “primarily an ideological movement,” and emphasized that is not “only involved in investigations.”
