Today (Tuesday), Chairman of the Knesset Committee MK Yoav Kish rejected MK Yoel Hasson’s request to determine a set of rules for how MKs should manage their social media pages.

“In recent years, social networks have become a central arena for public discussion and direct contact between the public and its elected officials,” explained Hasson in his request. “Most MKs are working on official Facebook and Twitter pages, through which they update the public on their activities and receive feedback.”

Hasson added that there are some MKs who block certain users and delete comments that criticize them: “The fact that the funding and operation of these pages are usually done through public resources requires that this phenomenon be treated with due seriousness.”

Kish, on the other hand, claimed that he cannot see a reason for the intervention of the Knesset Committee in the matter.  “A public official has the full right to determine the rules of conduct on his personal page,” he wrote. “It would be a mistake to dictate rules to MKs on the subject.”
