Netanyahu’s attempt to appease non-Orthodox Jews: Green light for Ezrat Yisrael Plaza renovations

After the massive uproar in the Jewish world caused by the government’s decision to suspend the Western Wall agreement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appears to be trying to please the Conservative and Reform movements. Israeli Cabinet Secretary Tzachi Braverman arrived at the Western Wall today in order to examine the plan for renovating the egalitarian prayer section.

Israeli Cabinet Secretary Tzachi Braverman arrived at the Western Wall on Thursday along with Israel Antiquities Authority representatives in what appears to be an attempt to mitigate the non-Orthodox Jewish movements’ outrage from earlier this week. Braverman toured the Ezrat Yisrael Plaza, where the egalitarian prayer section is supposed to be established in accordance with the Western Wall agreement, in order to review the renovations that are set to take place.

While the Israeli government decided earlier this week to suspend the Western Wall agreement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced that the Ezrat Yisrael Plaza renovations will go ahead as scheduled. The cost of the renovations is expected to reach 18 million NIS.
