Health Minister Litzman officially hands in resignation
Israeli government coalition meeting canceled due to Sabbath crisisAfter Israeli Health Minister Yaakov Litzman resigned and Shas Party Chairman Aryeh Deri boycotted the coalition meeting, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is attempting to solve the Sabbath crisis.
Today (Sunday), for the first time since this government was established, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu canceled the meeting of the heads of the coalition parties. Instead, he held individual meetings with the chairmen to attempt to solve the ongoing Sabbath drama.
In order to resolve the crisis with the Haredi parties, Netanyahu decided to promote two legislation proposals intended to limit activity on Sabbath. Earlier, Shas Chairman Aryeh Deri boycotted the meeting in protest of the cancelation of the vote on his proposed legislation. In addition, Deri isn’t willing to accept any amendment of the Likud party to his legislation proposal.
One of these legislations would allow Interior Minister Deri to cancel any municipal bylaw through which businesses remain open on Sabbath. However, the legislation isn’t expected to work retroactively and so wouldn’t bypass the Supreme Court’s decision to allow certain businesses in Tel Aviv to operate on Sabbath.
