Sara Netanyahu on Wednesday said she was "shocked" to hear about the death of Shimon Peres, with whom she and her husband, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, met frequently during Peres' term as Israel's President.

"I couldn't fall asleep last night," Mrs. Netanyahu told Channel 2 News in a special interview. "At 2:30 I called Chemi (Peres' son) just to offer him and all of his family a hug. I remember very well how difficult these final moments can be. It is still hard to grasp. I really hoped and believed that he would be with us for many more years."

Mrs. Netanyahu then offered a glimpse into the weekly meeting she and her husband had with Peres at their residence. "They were fascinating," she said. "We would discuss political issues as well, but always in a pleasant manner. There were never uneasy moments, even when there were sometimes disagreements between them. I felt like I was witnessing a piece of history."

"When I looked at the two of them, I saw two great leaders who had the nation's best interest at heart," Mrs. Netanyahu continued. "There was never any personal rivalry, there was mutual appreciation. I looked up to him like a daughter."
