Settler leaders are accusing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of closing a deal with the Trump administration "behind their backs" to expand the Palestinian city of Qalqiliya.

According to the plan in question, up to 14,000 new apartments are expected to be built in Area C, which will house a potential 60,000 Palestinians. This will more than double the number of residents in the city.

The Samaria Regional Council said no government official had notified them of the move.

"The government promised us that there would be increased construction in Judea and Samaria, regardless of who replaces Obama," said Yossi Dagan, the council head. "There's no limit to this government's unreliability."

Israeli security sources said the plan had been formulated long ago by Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman. However, the right-wing Regavim movement is planning to officially object it.
