Ultra-Orthodox politicians outraged over cancellation of draft bill
Shas members divided over fate of MK who attended gay nephew's weddingFollowing MK Yigal Guetta's decision to resign, some Shas members think his decision to attend his gay nephew's wedding does not justify his dismissal from the party.
Members of the ultra-Orthodox Shas party are deeply divided over the recent scandal surrounding MK Yigal Guetta, who was forced out of the party after revealing live on the radio that he had attended the wedding of his gay nephew.
Although Guetta has already sent his resignation letter to Shas chairman Aryeh Deri, his fate in the party isn't finalized just yet. None of the members of Moetzet Chachmei HaTorah, the party's body of ultimate authority, has signed the letter demanding Guetta's dismissal.
Rabbi Shimon Baadani, a council member, opposes the firing of Guetta and has said he views Guetta's decision to attend the wedding as an act of "embracing his family."
Other members, though, including Rabbi Shalom Cohen, the council's president, are furious with Guetta for disclosing the information on the air.
Deri, who is currently in Ukraine, will be the one who determines Guetta's fate when he comes back to Israel in a few days.
It is likely that Guetta will have to apologize publicly for the "incriminating" radio interview if he wants to remain in the party.
