On Tuesday, reports indicated that an American delegation will arrive in Israel next week to begin the process of transferring the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. The embassy was announced to be moved by May 14, 2018 on the 70th anniversary of the State of Israel.

The delegation is expected to address all the legal barriers of the process, as well as to tour the area of the proposed embassy. The Americans reportedly intend to prepare the infrastructure in three stages: converting the consular department to a small embassy, moving the ambassador to the US Consulate and establishing the permanent structure of the embassy at the end of next year.

In addition, Israel’s Hadashot News reported that the Americans asked the Jerusalem municipality for a larger area in the capital rather than the proposed ‘Diplomat’ hotel, but the municipality explained that there are no such land reserves.

The hotel is to be demolished and transformed into the US embassy. The US embassy said in response to the announcement that "we are considering a number of options, including the use of land already owned by the American administration in Jerusalem."
