Senior-level US officials are sharply critical of Israel's Education Minister Naftali Bennett for his vocal opposition to peace initiatives being promoted by US President Donald Trump, saying Bennett's behavior is "burying" the chances that the relocation of the US embassy to Jerusalem will ever be carried out.

According to Channel 2 News, some of Trump's closest officials sounded frustrated and furious with Bennett when speaking to their Israeli counterparts. "This isn't how we would expect Israel to treat an ally that constantly supports it, especially in this friendly administration," an official was quoted as saying.

"Apparently, some ministers don't understand the sensitivity of the situation regarding the embassy," the official reportedly said. "If anyone is burying the chances for its relocation, it's Bennett."

These statements come just four days before Trump's visit to Israel, and amid speculations on whether or not he would address the issue of relocating the embassy and what his stance would be.

Sources close to Bennett said in response that he "was elected to protect the interests of Israel, not those of the White House."

"There are some who agree to make concessions in Jerusalem and in other parts of our homeland," they said. "Bennett will continue to speak out against it."
