153 French MPs call on Hollande to recognize Palestinian state before 2017 presidential electionOver 150 French MPs signed a letter demanding that French President François Hollande officially recognize a Palestinian state before his 5-year term comes to an end. “France needs to demonstrate its commitment to break this deadlock that this conflict has reached,” stated the MPs.
153 French MPs signed a letter sent to French President François Hollande demanding that he officially recognize a Palestinian state, according to the French newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche. In the letter, the MPs urged Hollande to take a diplomatic step before his 5-year term comes to an end.
“France needs to demonstrate its commitment to break this deadlock that this conflict has reached by declaring that the Palestinian people have the right to a state,” read the letter signed by the MPs. “This is out of respect for international law and Israel’s security.”

The letter was written by MP Gilbert Roger, who is the president of the France-Palestine Friendship Group. The MPs who signed the letter argue that it is unjust that France advocates for a two-state solution without recognizing both of the states.
“Just as you said yourself, Mr. President, only direct negotiations can be beneficial,” continued the letter. “Therefore, it is time that the negotiations take place on equal grounds, state to state.” The letter was signed by MPs from across the country’s political spectrum.
