On Wednesday, a former student from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland near Boca Raton, Florida opened fire on the campus, killing at least 17 adults and children. The suspect is in custody and has been identified as Nikolas Cruz.
Cruz is a 19-year old who was expelled from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School for disciplinary reasons. He is reportedly due in court on Thursday. Students commented on the shooter, stating they “were not surprised” to find out it was Cruz and that he did not have many friends. Students had also commented on Cruz’s obsession with guns. Local Sherriff Scott Israel stated that the Sherriff’s Department has already started looking into Cruz’s digital history stating it is “very disturbing.”
Sources indicate that the school’s fire alarm went off around 3:00 pm. The school had already had a fire drill earlier that day. Some students stated that they had remained inside thinking the alarm was false, due to the drill having taken place earlier that day. Sources believe that Cruz set off the alarm around 3:00 pm in order to get more students out of the classroom so he could begin shooting.
Melissa Falkowski, a teacher at the high school, told CNN that that the faculty had recently engaged in an active shooters drill and were frustrated at the situation stating that they “could not have been more prepared.”
