An Afghan soldier killed three U.S. soldiers and injured a fourth during a joint military operation in the Achin district of Afghanistan’s Nangahar province, the Pentagon confirmed in an official statement on Saturday night.
A U.S. official said that the soldiers were shot by an Afghan commando in what is being called an “insider attack” because the shooter belonged to a military force that is considered an ally of the U.S. Army in the country. The shooter was shot dead by other Afghan soldiers. The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack.
American and Afghan forces have been working together over the past few months in order to battle the local ISIS terrorists in the country’s Nangahar province. U.S. President Donald Trump and U.S. Vice President Mike Pence were updated about the incident, according to a statement made by the White House. In Milwaukee, Pence commented on the shooting: “When heroes fall, Americans grieve. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of American heroes.”
