Three U.S. Army Special Forces soldiers were killed and two were injured Wednesday in an ambush by al-Qaeda terrorists in southwest Niger, a senior U.S. defense official told the New York Times. The U.S. soldiers were on a patrol with local forces near the Mali border when the terrorists ambushed them.
“We can confirm reports that a joint U.S. and Nigerien patrol came under hostile fire in southwest Niger,” a spokesman for the U.S. Africa Command in Germany said in an email. According to the report, U.S. President Donald Trump was informed about the incident.
The ambush took place north of Niamey, the country’s capital city. Five Nigerien soldiers were also injured in the attack. Wednesday’s deaths were the first American casualties since the U.S. began providing defense aid to Niger.
