At least six nursing home residents died today in Holywood, Florida after being left with no electricity and air conditioning in Irma’s aftermath, authorities said today (Wednesday). Millions of other Floridians have also been left without electricity and air conditioning, while Florida’s temperatures remain high.

The causes of the deaths are currently being investigated by Hollywood Police, but the deaths may be due to the nursing home losing its air conditioning during Hurricane Irma, CNN reported. “We are conducting a criminal investigation (and) not ruling anything out at this time,” Sanchez stated at a press conference.

According to Reuters, when police forces arrived at the Rehabilitation Center of Hollywood Hills, two elderly residents were found dead and three died later at the hospital. 115 additional people were evacuated from the facility by local firefighters, while others were located in critical condition, Hollywood spokeswoman Raelin Story stated.

“Approximately 150 facilities out of the nearly 700 (nursing) facilities in the state do not currently have full power services restored,” read a statement by the Florida Health Care Association, which does not represent the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills, but does represent 81% of Florida’s nursing homes, according to CNN.
