Report: Record amount of terror attacks within OECD countriesThe Global Terrorism Index revealed that a majority of OECD countries have suffered from a sharp increase in terror attacks within their borders this year. The reasoning behind the data is that the terrorist organizations are weakening within their home countries and are moving their terrorist attacks to Western countries.
According to a report published by the Global Terrorism Index (GTI) today (Wednesday), the number of fatalities resulting from terror attacks within OECD countries has increased by 650% in 2016. However, the number of fatalities worldwide has actually declined as terrorist organizations such as ISIS and Boko Haram have weakened within their home countries and have launched terror attacks in developed countries.
The report also discovered that in 2015 alone, 29,376 people were murdered in terror attacks, which was a 10% decrease from the four years beforehand. Researchers attributed the decrease to action taken against ISIS and Boko Haram terrorists, which reduced the amount of casualties they inflicted by a third.
Furthermore, the report determined that 21 out of the 34 OECD countries suffered at least one terror attack within its borders, where a majority of the fatalities resulting from terror attacks occurred in France and Turkey. In addition, Denmark, France, Germany, Sweden and Turkey experienced the highest amount of terrorist-related casualties since 2000. 23 OECD countries in total were documented having record numbers of terror victims.
