The Aseman Airlines ATR-72 crashed in in a foggy, mountainous area near the town of Semirom. Iranian media has reported that the pilot tried to make an emergency landing but was unsuccessful.
Iran's commercial passenger aircraft fleet has aged in recent years under international sanctions, leading to frequent air accidents. After the 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, which included a partial lifting of the sanctions, Iran was able to sign deals with Airbus and Boeing to purchase dozens of new planes.
Last week, 71 people were killed when a Russian passenger plane crashed near Moscow. The plane reportedly went missing from radars a few minutes after taking off from Domodedovo Airport.
