Mexico suffers another earthquake, at least 5 deadToday, another strong earthquake hit Mexico, resulting in fatalities. Thousands fled to the streets in order to escape the collapsing buildings.
Today (Tuesday), a 7.1-magnitute earthquake hit the city of Puebla in Mexico. According to local reports, at least 5 people were killed. The Mexico City International Airport has suspended its activity.
Mexico residents reported that buildings trembled as thousands escaped to the streets for fear of their lives. There are reports of many people that are trapped in buildings that are on fire. Despite his differences with the country, US President Donald Trump Tweeted a message of support to the people of Mexico.
Earlier this month, 90 people died in an even stronger earthquake in Mexico and tens of thousands of homes were severely damaged. The 8.1-magnitude earthquake, which was mainly felt in the Chiapas and Oaxaca states, was stronger than the 1985 tremor that killed thousands of people. The death toll from last week’s earthquake was significantly lower, however, because the depth of the quake was greater and the main impact areas were farther away from the capital.
Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto announced three national days of mourning following the natural disaster and promised that the destroyed neighborhoods would be rebuilt.
