75th anniversary of first transport to Bełżec extermination camp marked in PolandHundreds of people gathered today in Lublin, Poland, to mark the 75th anniversary of the first transport of Jews to the Bełżec extermination camp. Approximately 28,000 Jews were deported from the Lublin Umschlagplatz to the Bełżec extermination camp during Operation Reinhardt.
75 years ago, the Nazis started to deport thousands of Jews to the Bełżec extermination camp in Poland as part of their Final Solution plan. The day is marked with a march that leads to the Lublin Umschlagplatz, the site from which some of the Jews were deported to the camp.
The Nazi deported approximately 28,000 Jews from the Lublin Umschlagplatz during Operation Reinhardt. The Bełżec extermination camp was created for the sole purpose of implementing Operation Reinhardt, which was a crucial part of the Final Solution. The camp operated for less than a year, from March to December 1942.
