A 25-year-old female green turtle in Thailand had to have emergency surgery after she swallowed over 900 coins. The operation took place today (Monday) in Bangkok. The 11 pounds of coins in her stomach caused her shell to crack and led to a life-threatening infection.

After the five veterinarians from Chulalongkorn University’s veterinary faculty conducted a 3D scan of the turtle’s stomach ahead of the surgery, they noticed that she had also swallowed two fish hooks. After the 915 coins and two fish hooks were removed, the turtle was transferred to a navy turtle conservation center outside of Bangkok.
