Today (Friday), Russian political activist Alexei Navalny was detained by local police only hours before he was supposed to be at a rally in Nizhny Novgorod.

According to Navanly, “the Kremlin got scared” and that is why they arrested him. The opponent of Russian President Vladimir Putin and anti-corruption activist called on protesters to show up at the rally, regardless of whether he is there or not.

According to Navalny’s site, although the rally was approved, the mayor’s office illegally tried to recall the agreement on the phone and stated that another event is scheduled to take place at the same site.

Last June, Russia’s election committee decided that 41-year-old Navalny isn’t eligible to run for presidency in the upcoming election following several arrests. Over the past several months, hundreds of anti-Putin protesters were detained.
