Britain to ban diesel, gasoline powered carsBy 2040, the British government is planning to ban the sale of diesel or gasoline powered vehicles. The goal is to fight the increasing air pollution in the country.
During the night (Wednesday), British media outlets reported that the British government will soon announce the implementation of a broad program designed to reduce vehicular air pollution in the country.
According to the reports, starting in 2040, the sale of vehicles with a diesel or gasoline engine in Britain will be banned, including the sale of hybrid cars. The goal is that all vehicles in the country will be powered by electricity, which will reduce emissions of harmful substances into the air and prevent high levels of morbidity due to air pollution.
The initiative follows a similar plan that will begin in France next month. According to Britain’s lawmakers, air pollution will be the biggest risk to public health in the UK in the future and will cost the economy billions of euros.
In addition to the electricity-only plan, another section that is expected to be revealed today by the government will allow the imposition of additional taxes on highly polluting gasoline vehicles already in 2020.
At the beginning of the month, Swedish car manufacturer Volvo Cars announced that all of its new car-models will be completely hybrid or electric from 2019. “This announcement marks the end of the solely combustion engine-powered car,” stated Volvo CEO Håkan Samuelsson.
