Today (Monday), the British Royal Mail revealed the biggest threat to the country’s postmen. Over the past 5 years, there were no less than 14.5 thousand reports of attacks by dogs. Since the beginning of 2017 alone, over 2,500 such attacks were reported- an average of 7 daily attacks. The data was revealed by the company as part of its annual Dog Awareness Week.

“People think it's funny,” postman James Reynolds told Sky News after being attacked by a dog himself last year. “But trust me, it's not funny. Every time I see a large dog now when I'm delivering, I freeze.”

Royal Mail’s Group Director of Safety Doctor Shaun Davis said that although she knows most dogs aren’t dangerous, owners must take actions to help prevent such attacks. “Things like perhaps feeding the dog at the time the delivery postman or woman would normally come,” he said. “Or keeping the dog in another room in the house or part of the garden.”

According to Davis, owners who can’t be home at the time of the delivery should simply move the box to a place their pets can’t reach.
