The tensions surrounding the Catalan independence referendum continue as Catalan President Carles Puigdemont announced that an independence declaration is imminent. During an interview with the BBC on Tuesday, the Catalan leader said his government plans to “act at the end of this week or the beginning of next.”

Puigdemont also delivered a warning to the Spanish government. When asked what he would do if the Spanish government decided to take control of Catalonia’s government, he replied that it will be "an error which changes everything."

These declarations follow the harsh rhetoric by the Spanish King Filipe VI, who called Catalonia’s actions “criminal disloyalty” that may endanger the stability of the entire Spanish economy. 90% of voters in the referendum, which was ruled unconstitutional by Spanish courts, chose to support independence for Catalonia.
