Chicago to sue Department of Justice following immigration scandalChicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced that he will file a lawsuit against the Department of Justice following threats to prevent federal grants from the city for non-compliance with its new immigration policy.
Yesterday (Sunday), Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel stated that he intends to file a lawsuit against the Department of Justice (DOJ) following the White House’s threats to prevent federal grants to the city’s police due to a lack of cooperation with new immigration policy.
Emanuel, a senior-level Democrat, was former US President Barack Obama’s White House Chief of Staff. “Chicago will not be blackmailed into changing our values and we are and will remain a welcoming city,” Emanuel stated at a press conference. “Chicago will not let our police officers become political pawns in a debate.”
According to the mayor, the lawsuit will prevent Washington from setting legal precedents that he claims could lead to termination of funding from other sources as well.
Chicago’s lawsuit comes after Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ statements from several weeks ago. Sessions stated that the DOJ will prevent federal grants from ‘sanctuary cities’ such as Chicago, cities that refuse to cooperate with immigration authorities and provide shelter to illegal immigrants in their territory.
