China’s President Xi becomes country’s most powerful leader since Mao ZedongThe ideas expressed during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s speech in front of the Communist Party’s National Congress last week have been added to the party’s constitution. The move by the ruling party makes Xi the most powerful Chinese leader since former party chairman Mao Zedong.
China’s Communist Party voted Tuesday in favor of including President Xi Jinping’s ideology in its constitution. The proposal was unanimously passed at the end of the ruling party’s 19th National Congress.
The step means that any person who opposes the ideas presented by Xi will be considered an enemy of the party and China. With his ideology now enshrined in the constitution, Xi will be the most powerful Chinese leader since Mao Zedong.
Last week, JOL reported that Xi addressed the congress, explaining his political vision, which has been dubbed “Xi Jinping’s Thought” by senior Communist Party officials. While previous Chinese leaders have added their ideology to the constitution, this is the first time that such ideas have been grouped together as a leader’s “thought,” which is the highest level of the political philosophy in China, since Mao.
At the beginning of his three-hour speech, Xi said that China is entering a new chapter in its history, an era during which it will need to “take center stage in the world.” He added that the country is “quickly advancing under values of socialism with Chinese characteristics.”
Xi emphasized that his way may be an alternative for the world’s current leadership, stating that his path could be “a new choice for other countries.” The president then laid out his vision and listed China’s accomplishments under his leadership. He also stressed China’s important role in the development of the humankind.
