China’s military conducted a series of missile tests over the weekend as a show of force to Washington amid the tensions with neighboring North Korea, US officials told Fox News. According to the American news agency, China’s forces were targeting replicas of US missile batteries and aircraft, similar to those stationed in South Korea due to Pyongyang’s continuous missile tests.

The officials said that 20 missiles were fired at the mock targets. The dramatic drill was apparently part of the country’s celebrations for army day, which was yesterday.

In recent days, the tensions between the US and North Korea have increased due to the latter’s latest missile test, which involved an intercontinental ballistic missile. This is the second time that Pyongyang has tested such a missile in the past month. Following the test, US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley said told the UN Security Council: “The time for talk is over.” She added that China “must decide if it is finally willing to take this vital step” in containing the North Korean threat.

However, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson asked to send a different message to Pyongyang yesterday: “We are not your enemy ... but you are presenting an unacceptable threat to us, and we have to respond.” Tillerson also clarified that the US is not interested in a regime change in North Korea.
