Colombian president Juan Manuel Santos awarded 2016 Nobel Peace PrizeThe Nobel Committee recognized Santos' efforts to end the civil war in his country, which has been going on for over 50 years.
Colombia's president Juan Manuel Santos on Friday was declared the Nobel Peace Prize winner for 2016. The Nobel Committee chose Santos out of 376 other candidates.
The five-person committee said Santos was awarded the prize "for his resolute efforts to bring the country’s more than 50-year-long civil war to an end." Last week, a peace deal with a rebels' guerilla group, which Santos negotiated, was narrowly rejected in a referendum.
"This result has created great uncertainty as to the future of Colombia," the committee said. "There is a real danger that the peace process will come to a halt and that civil war will flare up again."
