Colombia's president Juan Manuel Santos on Friday was declared the Nobel Peace Prize winner for 2016. The Nobel Committee chose Santos out of 376 other candidates.

The five-person committee said Santos was awarded the prize "for his resolute efforts to bring the country’s more than 50-year-long civil war to an end." Last week, a peace deal with a rebels' guerilla group, which Santos negotiated, was narrowly rejected in a referendum.

"This result has created great uncertainty as to the future of Colombia," the committee said. "There is a real danger that the peace process will come to a halt and that civil war will flare up again."
