The deadly fire that that killed 12 people in New York City on Thursday night was caused by a 3-year-old playing with a kitchen stove, New York Fire Department officials said on Friday. The incident has been described by New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio “as one of the worst losses of life to a fire in many, many years.”

According to the officials, the mother of the toddler grabbed her two children and escaped but left the apartment door open, which may have enabled the flames to spread. "Last night’s tragic fire, other than 9/11, was the worst loss of life from a fire in our city in almost 28 years," said New York City Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro in a press conference on Friday, "It took the fire so quickly upstairs, people had little time to react. Open stairs act as chimneys.”

Among the victims are a year-old baby and a 7-year-old boy. “People died on various floors of the apartment, ranging in age from 1 to over 50.” Nigro said. “In a department that is surely no stranger to tragedy, we’re shocked by the lives lost."
