First-ever object from another solar system discovered, astronomers believeAn unidentified object which was seen racing through our solar system is believed to be the first-ever interstellar object to visit us.
Astronomers believe they have spotted, for the first time in history, an object from another solar system passing near our sun.
The object, which was given the name A/2017 U1, was discovered last month and is believed to be an interstellar object because of its unique orbit. It reportedly has a mass of 400 meters in diameter.
"So far, everything indicates this is likely an interstellar object, but more data would help confirm," said Paul Chodas, the manager of NASA's Center for Near Earth Object Studies.
Early calculations suggest that the object could be similar in make-up to many of those of the Kuiper belt - a region just beyond Neptune which contains small icy objects.
