Soccer legend Diego Maradona says he’s ready to fight for Maduro

As Venezuela’s situation continues to deteriorate with every day that passes, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro received support from an unusual source: former soccer star Diego Maradona. “When Maduro orders, I am dressed as a soldier for a free Venezuela, to fight against the imperialism and those who want to take our flags,” he wrote on Facebook.

While Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro is being criticized by Latin American countries and the US over the amount of force he is using against his own citizens, soccer legend Diego Maradona voiced his support for him in a Facebook post. Maradona called on his fans to support the socialist president of Venezuela and even said that he is ready to fight on behalf of Maduro against the imperialist forces.

“We are [C]havistas until death,” the Argentinian soccer player wrote, in reference to former Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. “When Maduro orders, I am dressed as a soldier for a free Venezuela, to fight against the imperialism and those who want to take our flags, which is the most sacred thing we have.”

“Long live the revolution!!!” Maradona wrote at the end of his post, which was published in English, Spanish and Italian. His post about supporting the man Washington has defined as a dictator who harms his own people was criticized by former Argentina soccer star Mario Kempes. “[H]ow can you support the death of 124 young people who defended liberty and democracy in their country,” Kempes, who is now an ESPN commentator, wrote.
