Florida Governor calls on FBI Director to resign in light of revelation that agency knew about Parkland shooterAfter the tragic school shooting in Parkland, Florida, in which 17 people were murdered, the FBI announced that it received a tip about the shooter and failed to follow protocol to address the tip. Florida Governor Rick Scott has called on the FBI Director to resign.
On Friday, the FBI admitted to having received intelligence and tips from someone who knew the Parkland shooter and warned the FBI a month ago that he is capable of such an attack.
A person close to the shooter, Nikolas Cruz, contacted the FBI in January to alert them of concerns about Cruz, the FBI said in a statement. The FBI also admitted to not appropriately following protocol to investigate the tip.
The FBI stated, "The information was not provided to the Miami Field Office, and no further investigation was conducted at that time." The admission led Florida Governor Rick Scott to call on FBI Director Christopher Wray to step down.
In light of this discovery that FBI failed to act, US Attorney General Jeff Sessions stated that an investigation into FBI procedure will take place, "It is now clear that the warning signs were there and tips to the FBI were missed. We see the tragic consequences of those failures."
As previously reported by JOL, after the attack, the Sherriff’s department immediately began looking into Cruz’s digital footprint and reported it to be “very disturbing.” Cruz’s Instagram account was discovered with several photos of weapons. In addition, Cruz wrote in comments on YouTube videos that he wanted to kill people and police officers with his AR-15.
