FBI rejected White House request to discredit Trump-Russia news stories

The White House requested that the FBI publicly reject the news stories about the alleged ties between associates of U.S. President Donald Trump and senior-level Russia officials. A White House official stated that this request was made only after the FBI told Trump administration officials that it does not believe that the reports are accurate.

The FBI refused a recent White House request to publicly reject the news stories about the alleged ties between associates of U.S. President Donald Trump and senior-level Russia officials, according to CNN. According to a White House official, Trump’s aides only contacted the FBI and requested that the agency publicly discredit the media reports after the FBI told White House officials that it does not believe that the reports are accurate.

The alleged extensive contact between Trump administration officials and Russian senior level officials is considered unusual and a violation of restrictions. Last week, Trump’s White House national security adviser Michael Flynn resigned after it was revealed that he was in contact with the Russian ambassador to the U.S. during and after the presidential race.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer rejected the claims that the White House asked the FBI to stop the news stories. “We didn’t try to knock the story down,” he said. “We asked them to tell the truth."
