Former French presidential candidate Marine Le Pen has been charged with distribution of violent images for tweeting three pictures of executions carried out by ISIS on Twitter in 2015.
The charge against the far right-wing leader was filed on Thursday near Paris. A few months ago, France’s National Assembly stripped Le Pen of her parliamentary immunity in the case. If the case goes to trial and she is convicted of the offense, she could face up to three years in prison and a fine of €75,000 (about $91,390).
One of the images that Le Pen uploaded to Twitter showed the body of beheaded American journalist James Foley. The other photos were of other ISIS captives being murdered. In the tweets, Le Pen slammed the murderous terrorist group.
Le Pen, the leader of France’s National Front, has denounced the indictment against her. “I am being charged for having condemned the horrors of Daesh,” she told AFP, using the Arabic acronym for ISIS. “In other countries this would have earned me a medal.”
