Trèbes supermarket attack: Policeman who swapped places with hostage diesArnaud Beltrame, a police officer who swapped places with a female hostage during Friday's supermarket attack in Trèbes, has died of his wounds.
A French police officer who swapped places with a hostage during Friday's shooting in a Trèbes supermarket has died, European news agencies report.
Lt. Col. Arnaud Beltrame offered to take the place of a female hostage and was shot by the gunman as he entered the supermarket. French President Emmanuel Macron called Beltrame "a hero" and said he died "serving the nation, to which he had already given so much."
The attacker, 26-year-old Redouane Lakdim, was known to intelligence agencies from minor offenses. He killed two people and injured 15 others when he raided the supermarket in the southwestern French town. He killed one other person while stealing a car before arriving at the store. Beltrame is the fourth victim in the attack.
Local prosecutors said Lakdim claimed allegiance to ISIS. During the hostage situation, he demnaded the release of Salah Abdeslam, a jailed ISIS member who was behind the 2015 Bataclan massacre in Paris.
