Today (Monday), Austrian officials reported that the house in which Adolf Hitler was born is set to be demolished, following a lengthy legal battle.

Austrian Interior Minister Wolfgang Sobotka stated that a set of professionals discussed this issue for a long time and decided that the house must be demolished in order to prevent it from becoming another neo-Nazi pilgrimage site.

The home, located in the Austrian-German border town of Braunau am Inn, has been the subject of much dispute. Yet the cause was abandoned for quite a while as the homeowner refused to put it up for sale. Since 1972, the Austrian government has rented the house from its owner for 4,800 EUR per month. The Austrian parliament is currently expected to pass a law allowing for the home to become state property, upon which it will then be torn down.

A structure that will be utilized for charity and will serve the community is supposed to replace the home. “The house will be wiped off the face of the earth,” Sobotka said. “The evidence of its existence will surely remain forever. But a new building will be erected in its place and will be utilized for charitable purposes.”
