Today (Friday), local authorities reported that 22 people were killed and many others were injured in a rush-hour stampede on a footbridge over a train station. The reason for the stampede is still unknown. Railway Minister Piyush Goyal ordered an investigation into the incident.

According to some reports, 4 trains came at the same time and people wanted to get on quickly due to heavy rain. Several people slipped, which started the chaos. “My deepest condolences to all those who have lost their lives due to the stampede in Mumbai,” Tweeted Indian Prime Minister Narenda Modi. “Prayers with those who are injured. Situation in Mumbai is being continuously monitored.”

Many criticize India’s old public transport infrastructure, used by millions every day, as the cause of the disaster.
