Watch: Miami as Irma strikes
The US National Hurricane Center announced early Monday morning that Irma is now a Category 1 hurricane. However, while Irma has significantly lost strength after making landfall in Florida, the storm is still pounding areas of the state and will continue to wreak havoc as it travels northwest. Meanwhile, the authorities are investigating a number of looting incidents that were reported.
As the storm progressed through Florida overnight, many trees were uprooted and severe damage was caused to homes. US President Donald Trump approved a disaster declaration for the areas hit by Irma. The significance of this announcement means that residents whose assets were destroyed will be able to receive federal compensation.
Irma has already been described as the most powerful Atlantic Ocean hurricane, killing at least 28 people in the Caribbean when it was a Category 5 storm. In addition, the authorities in Florida have confirmed that at least three people were killed by Irma in the state.
