Italian Coast Guard rescues 6,500 refugees off the coast of Libya

The Italian Coast Guard rescued 6,500 migrants off the coast of Libya and brought them to Europe during a complex rescue mission yesterday.

The Italian Coast Guard reported last night (Monday) that it participated in the planning of the rescue mission that saved 6,500 refugees off the coast of Libya. This was one of the biggest and most complex one-day rescue missions. The mission included about 40 different rescue operations in which refugees from Eritrea and Sudan were saved.

“The command center coordinated 40 rescue operations that included vessels from Italy, humanitarian organizations and the EU’s border agency Frontex and saved 6,500 migrants,” wrote the Italian Coast Guard on its Twitter account.
