Watch: The arrest of the terrorist after the attack
Eye-witnesses continue to describe the horrific moments of the Tuesday afternoon pickup truck-ramming attack in Manhattan, which claimed the lives of eight people and injured 11 others. Some stated that they even saw tire marks on the bodies of the victims.
Eugene Duffy, a Manhattan restaurant chef, said that he was crossing a street when the attack happened. Duffy explained that he initially thought that the scream he heard was from a Halloween prank. “I look down and I see a white pickup truck a couple of more blocks down in the bike path,” he said. “Automatically, I know something’s wrong. Then, as I go down more toward where the girl is screaming, I see two gentlemen laying there and they have tire tracks marked across their bodies. You could tell they both weren’t here.”
Among the victims were five friends from Rosario, Argentina, who were celebrating their 30th school reunion. According to the Argentinian newspaper La Nacion, the five friends were architects, entrepreneurs and technology experts in their late 40s.
Argentina’s Foreign Affairs Ministry stated that they have been identified as Hernán Mendoza, Diego Angelini, Alejandro Pagnucco, Ariel Erlij and Hernán Ferruchi. A sixth friend, Martin Ludovico Marro, was injured and taken to the hospital.
Before leaving Rosario on Saturday afternoon, they took a group picture at the airport. Erlij, who organized the trip, joined his friends in the US a few hours later on a separate flight. According to an Argentinian media outlet, 48-year-old Erlij, who was Jewish and owned the Argentinian steel firm Ivanar, paid for the flights of two of his friends so that they could come on the trip.
