Trump’s decision draws criticism from Khamenei, praise from Iranian citizens

Iranian officials and citizens continue to respond to US President Donald Trump’s decision to quit the 2015 nuclear deal. While Iran’s Ayatollah Ali Khamenei slammed the American leader, many Iranian citizens have taken to Twitter to express their support for him.

In his first response to the American withdrawal from the nuclear deal, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei sent a fierce message to US President Donald Trump. “You’ve made a mistake! Iran will still be strong even after you die,” Khamenei said on Wednesday.

After he called Trump’s speech “stupid and superficial,” the 78-year-old ayatollah explained that America’s anti-Iran approach stems from the fact that Washington controlled the country during the Pahlavi dynasty—up until the 1979 Islamic Revolution. “We implemented the agreement but the hostile actions against us never stopped,” he added. “They are now talking about the matter of Iran’s regional presence and the missiles, but even if we accept these conditions, they will just want more and more.”

Iranian Armed Forces Chief of Staff Mohammad Bagheri also slammed the US but stressed that Trump’s decision did not come as a surprise in Tehran. According to him, Iran knew about Trump’s plans and had been preparing for 18 months. “We need to take care of ourselves,” he added.

Meanwhile, Iranian MPs set fire to a paper US flag and a piece of paper representing the 2015 nuclear deal on Wednesday morning.

While Iranian officials are making headlines for criticizing and protesting against Trump’s decision, many Iranian citizens have taken to social media to praise the US leader. Using the hashtag #ThankYouTrump, Iranians have been posting their supportive messages mainly on Twitter. “As an Iranian, I would like to say #ThankYouTrump. We, Iranians, will remove Mullahs pretty soon and invite you to visit our free country!” one user wrote.

“I thank President Trump as a resident citizen of Iran for cutting off US support for Islamic republic. Obama sold the people of Iran to the money of the mullahs,” another Iranian tweeted.
